About Badami

Badami, once the capital of the Chalukya Kingdom and formerly known as Vatapi is located in the Bagalkot district of North Karnataka. Badami is a city in the district of Bagalkot, Karnataka. It is divided into 23 wards. The Badami Town Municipal Council has population of 30,943 of which 15,539 are males while 15,404 are females as per report released by Census India 2011. Population of Children in the age group of 0-6 is 3877 which is 12.53 % of total population of Badami (TMC). In Badami Town Municipal Council, female sex ratio is of 991 against state average of 973. Moreover child sex ratio in Badami is around 923 compared to Karnataka state average of 948. Literacy rate of Badami city is 81.63% higher than state average of 75.36 %. In Badami, male literacy is around 89.69 % while female literacy rate is 73.57 %.

Badami Town Municipal Council has a total administration over 6,214 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorize to build roads within Town Municipal Council limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction.

Geography of Badami

The region where Badami is located has an average elevation with numerous rock cut structural temples from the Chalukyan times. The Agastya Lake lies by its side. The geographical coordinates are 15° 55' 0" North, 75° 41' 0" East. Today it is considered to be a National Heritage Site. The cave temples carved on the rocks are amongst the must visit sites of Badami.

History of Badami

Badami, formerly known as Vatapi, and it was the regal capital of the Badami Chalukyas from 540 to 757 AD. The place is famous for rock cut architecture which is visible in the numerous cave temples of the region. The Badami caves complex is part of a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. The caves are decorated with beautiful Fresco paintings.

The best time to visit Badami would be around the winter – Spring Seasons – from the months of November to March when it is less humid, with scarce rainfall. The tourists can enjoy nature and wildlife to its fullest during this time. The caves and rock cut temples happen to be the biggest attractions of this region.

Aihole

This is also known as the Cradle of Indian rock architecture and is situated right on the banks of the Malaprabha river. This had been built right in the Chalukya dynasty and since then the gorgeous structure has sustained many natural disasters and calamities.

Agastya Lake

Be it just going here for a picnic or sitting in the warmth of the sun or soaking the natural beauty, you should not miss a visit to this lake. In particular, there are a lot of temples around the area especially the bhootnath one is quite popular. All of these temples have been made of sandstone and are face the lake.

Archaeological Museum

This is a very special museum because it is located right in the heart of the mountain. A visit here is a natural escapade indeed. You can see a range of pre-historical sculptures here along with stone equipment. There are four galleries in together here along with two being open-aired. So do keep time in hand.

How to reach Badami

By Road
 
The town of Badami is very well connected by road. Especially from Hubli, Dharwad, Belgaum, Bangalore, Bagalkot, Hampi, Bijapur. Apart from numerous private and Government buses plying to this region, there are auto rickshaws and Tonga’s- Horse-Cart.
 
By Air
 
Hubli (around 106 km) and Belgaum (around 150 km) are the nearest airports to reach Badami. Flights from Mumbai and Bengaluru are connected to these places. From the airport, Badami can be reached by road only.
 
By Train

Along with other places it is easiest to reach Badami by train from Bengaluru, Hubli, Bijapur, Gadag, and Solapur. The ‘Badami Railway Station ‘is best connected with trains from Hubli.
